To our knowledge, these are the first observational evidence for bow shock current closure across the magnetosheath. This indicates current closure across the equatorial magnetosheath, and it is observed for IMF clock angles near 0 ∘ and 180 ∘. For predominantly southward IMF, we observe a component J n parallel (antiparallel) to the normal for GSM Y > 0 (<0), and oppositely directed for northward IMF. We compute the current density during the crossings and conclude that the component perpendicular to the shock normal (J ⊥) is consistent with a pileup of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) inside the magnetosheath. We have analyzed 154 MMS bow shock crossings near the equatorial plane. T.We use data from the first two dayside seasons of the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to study current systems associated with quasi-perpendicular bow shocks of generator type. ^ "Cluster reveals the reformation of the Earth's bow shock".^ "Cluster reveals Earth's bow shock is remarkably thin".Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Iowa. ^ "Cassini encounters Saturn's bow shock".Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics. The defining criterion of a shock wave is that the bulk velocity of the plasma drops from " supersonic" to "subsonic", where the speed of sound c s is defined byĬ s 2 = γ p / ρ is the relative speed between the plasma and the object. For stars, this boundary is typically the edge of the astrosphere, where the stellar wind meets the interstellar medium. ![]() For Earth and other magnetized planets, it is the boundary at which the speed of the stellar wind abruptly drops as a result of its approach to the magnetopause. In astrophysics, a bow shock occurs when the magnetosphere of an astrophysical object interacts with the nearby flowing ambient plasma such as the solar wind. The star's wind collides with the nebula flow. ![]()
